Jane Evelyn Atwood began photographing women in prison in 1989 over a ten-year period. She succeeded in obtaining to enter the world’s worst prisons, including death row. including death row. For this work, Jane Evelyn Atwood visited in forty prisons in nine European countries and in the United States where the number of women in prison has doubled since the 1980. This immersion in the world of women’s prisons leads us to a fresh look at women, crime and incarceration.
