Her first real encounter with the African continent came in 1989, when she set off in the footsteps of the writer-ethnologist Michel Leiris.
It was a journey of initiation that turned into love at first sight for this mosaic of peoples, whom she photographs with her own unique luminous style and attention to detail. Since then, from Burkina Faso to South Africa, from Benin to Ethiopia, Françoise Huguier has criss-crossed desert lands, lost villages and metropolises alive with the soul of musicians. In Mali, the country she loves so much, she founded the Rencontres photographiques de Bamako in 1994 to put the spotlight on great artists who had been little-known until then, discovering the talent of a Seydou Keïta or a Malik Sidibé and helping their work to shine on the world stage.
