Francisco Proner — Mariana : The Art of Resistance

Through the eyes of Brazilian photojournalist Francisco Proner, this exhibition tells a story of devastation, but also the solidarity, adaptation and resilience of an entire community to overcome the irreversible environmental, cultural and economic damage caused by the collapse of the Fundao dam on November 5, 2015, when 19 people were killed and a toxic mudslide contaminated 600 km of rivers and natural water sources until it reached the ocean.
Immersed in the lives of those who saw their livelihoods changed forever, the artist questions how each of us would react if such a tragedy occurred and destroyed our own homes.
Nearly 750,000 plaintiffs – local residents, municipalities, indigenous communities, religious groups, to name but a few – are still seeking justice and truth, nearly ten years after the Marianas disaster.
