Sinomocene is the outcome of a long-term project on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “New Silk Roads”, a $1,000 billion investment aimed at reinforcing the Middle Kingdom’s presence in the world through maritime, road and rail infrastructures.
Somewhere between geopolitical exploration, investigative journalism and an artistic approach, Davide Monteleone set out to document the impact of this sprawling expansion.
For this project, he has been awarded a National Geographic Storytelling Fellow grant in 2019.
“As a storyteller, with a background in photojournalism, art and politics, I’ve always been interested in the various possible uses of photography in relation to other disciplines such as history, politics, economics….
With Sinomocene, my aim is to make visible the extended social pyramid, whose apex is the enormous Chinese financial investment and whose base is the millions of individuals around the world affected by a strategy such as BIS.”
