When I was invited to Oaxaca for an artist residency in 2018, it felt like returning to a familiar place.
400 kilometres south of Mexico City, Oaxaca lays claim to its indigenous culture. The past is omnipresent, and the circles of time seem to invite visitors to forget corruption, violence and migration – but Mexico’s dramatic current affairs are never far away. Social inequality regularly pushes people onto the streets.
But on those days, everything seemed calm. Everywhere the light was bursting, the vegetation was luxuriant, the music and the seductive colours were bringing the city streets to life. A land of surrealism, imagination and mystery, Mexico is a land of contradictions. Between oblivion and memory, people live their daily lives, beyond the illusions of themselves and elsewhere.
