Thailand’s best-known contemporary photograph has a vast and varied body of work, but Pink Man, created right before the Tom Yum Gung economic crisis that broke out in Thailand and spread around the world, might be his greatest success. A symbol of greed and aspiration, the obese Asian man in an executive suit, whose nouveau riche vulgarity is made obvious by a tasteless color (“shocking” pink), carrying a matching shopping cart, shops for status and sensations, desperately attempting to fill an eternally empty cart/heart. An symbol of consumerism and contemporary art, Pink Man is the diametric opposite of the peacefully meditating Buddha statues of old Siam. Yet the current craze for gold Buddhas statues in Thai monasteries might soon make Pink Man redundant.
PINK MAN STORY is the compilation of the entire Pink Man series (1997-2018), with conceptual sketches and unpublished reflections by the artist and provocative texts by art writers and curators..
