Le photographe Lam Duc Hien, né sur les rives du Mékong, a remonté le fleuve mythique, de son delta au Vietnam jusqu’à sa source au Tibet en voguant au rythme du bateau-stop, traversant tous les pays qui le bordent (Vietnam, Cambodge, Laos, Thaïlande, Birmanie, Chine et Tibet) et partageant la vie quotidienne de ceux qui vivent sur ses flots et sur ses berges, à la découverte des « travaux et des jours » (pêche, rizière, hévéa, saline), des fêtes qui ponctuent leur calendrier et honorent le fleuve, des cicatrices parfois mal refermées laissées par les conflits meurtriers (guerres d’Indochine et du Vietnam, génocide par les Khmers rouges).

L’auteur, Philippe Franchini, donne un écho à ces images sous forme de chroniques, éclairant là une histoire méconnue, donnant ici la parole aux gens du fleuve, et citant ceux qui, comme André Malraux ou Marguerite Duras, ont vécu la fascination de ce fleuve.
