Settled in Brazil for more than ten years, Ludovic Carème took the journey of those he photographed backwards. He began to draw the portrait of the small favela of Agua Branca, in the heart of Sao Paulo, to finish his journey in Amazonia, where those who dreamed of finding happiness in the megalopolis left and had to disappoint in other favelas.
Abandoning the city for the deepest part of the Amazonia from the end of 2015 until the end of 2017, continuing his work as a portrait painter and complementing it with views, often sensual, of the forest but also with clear observations of deforestation or small still lifes found in the interiors, Ludovic Carème continues the sensitive development of a documentary photography with a solid classical basis.
Dignified and somewhat sad portraits, a luxuriant forest that is subject to human aggression, destroyed houses, the double movement that leads, all over the world, the poor to the cities and forbids them to go to the centers, everything is there, with restraint, with a form of poetry as well. And this evidence, whether the singer likes it or not, is that misery is not “softer in the sun”. Even less so in today’s Brazil, which is increasingly violent for those it marginalizes.
