Villes + (partie 3) Ahwaz-Iran, the most polluted city in the world
2014

Ahwaz city is located in South-western Iran right in the middle of the province of which this city is the capital. Lying in the Tigre basin nearby the Zagros mountains, it's 20 meters above sea level. Although winters are short, clement and rather dry, summers are long and extremly hot, during which the temperature can reach 46C. Summer heat contributes to the polluting smog related to a boundless industrial activity, mainly oil refining of which the city is the first spot at national level.

For years Ahwaz has been ranked by WHO as city the most polluted in the world. Sunday, August 3th 2014, 11:30 am. I'm getting off the plane. The 47C temperature and the local wind are drying my eyes, even though neither polluting smell nor dark veil betray the pollution. It's granted that social concerns hide perfectly the main ecological worry of the city.
