Agence VU - Patrick Taberna
Patrick Taberna

Born June 1964 in St Jean de Luz, Patrick Taberna began taking pictures during travels in Europe, Asia, Middle East, USA, while reading « L'Usage du Monde » by Nicolas Bouvier.

After his arrival in Paris in 1987, he regularly attended the club 30/40 led by Jean Luc Lemaitre and Francis Richard.
In 1997, he undertook a postal exhibition "Passage to the West." Because they gave him a taste for travel and photography, ten people received 37 files each at a rate of one per week. This adventure included a correspondence with Bernard Plossu and Robert Frank. He also met the latter in April 1999.
Still traveling, his photography is yet more and more autobiographical and intimate.
Patrick Taberna had Fnac honors in 2000 with "Nord magnétique", was Fnac Paris winner in 2001 with "Nos Italies" and 2004 winner of the HSBC Foundation for Photography with "Au fil des jours".

Taste of mandarins (2014)

Sometimes, memories are linked with five senses. And it is sometimes strange. For me, it would be a sound. Sometimes it is linked with a taste, sometimes with a scent. In Japan, people say about love, « taste like a lemon », so there might be a pathway in the human memory to be brought back to the facts by the five senses. Memories. The clarity of the memories are usually mentioned by the strength of the fact will be reminded more vividly. And for most of the times, those senses lead to me to a feeling what I have felt at the scenery. Taste of mandarin reminds me of my families and it is always. Mothers hands of peeling mandarin, red cover for a kotatsu and a stained news paper by...

A contretemps (2011)

Patrick Taberna started this series six years ago. « A contretemps » (On the off beat) is a long and slow work about his nearests, mainly produced during different trips. His family is the common thread of his piece of work, and the trip, even nearby, remains an excuse, to create. This need of the trip (even the closest) is a stimulus for the imagination, regaining through it a sense of childhood where every day is full of discoveries, and the mind is fully dedicated to the moment. "A contretemps" is a work on sensations of childhood, on the impressions lasting in memories, in this slight lag of time in our daily lives. Simplicity is a difficult balance to achieve. Patrick Taberna...

Of sand and wind (2010)

This series is born of the reading « The greek summer" by Jacques Lacarriere. This book had already led me to several trips to Greece a few years ago without retaining strong images. The sun, the sea, the contemplation were enough to fill our days. We went from an island to another with Sylvie, random encounters and in accordance with our desires. In summer 2005, I reread this book and a collection of fragments of poems written in the Cyclades 600 years before our era. In September, we went back to Athens and took the first boat from Piraeus, which took us on the first of the three islands of our stay, Serifos (the others being Sifnos and Milos). I had taken a brush and paint...

Dead memory (2008)

Second world war, 1942. A girl was born, fruit of the love between a French woman and a German soldier. On denunciation, the young man is sent on the Russian front where he dies a bit further. This girl is my mother. It is only at the age of 40 that I was able to talk about this story with my grandmother. Few informations on this man: His name: Paul Thiemann His village: Morrn His region: Landsberg Warthe 2005, I went in this region, now Polish, in search of tracks,… to evoke his memory.

The transciences (2006)

"The transciences "(2006), is a series that allows me to mix real and projected childhood images. A great reader of comics when I was a child (and I still do), the drawing was certainly before photography, the first object of my fascination for the image. With this series, I found myself, as the director of a strange little theater where the real and familiar landscapes became the backdrop for these giants childish drawings, creating a world of sweet strangeness.

Over the days (2004)

What I feel, seeing those pictures of Patrick Taberna, is that he needs it to live ... We must see to live or live to see? We go from specific locations to vague places, from noise to rustles, from an odor to a sensation, from solitary images to voluntarily poetically grouped together pictures... The photos are in color but do we really give attention to these details ? Do black and white really exist ? And what about color ? This is probably why Patrick Taberna speaks to us, that what counts is not the square or rectangle, or color or black and white, what counts is the fact that these pictures exist because he decided to see them and to take them. The visual photography, arts,...

Magnetic North, Norway (1999)

September 1999, they were two and were about to be three. He, she and her big belly went to the North, to the great North. Space was empty, the sea, the rocks some grass and nobody. Eyes wide opened on this landscape as on the quite begining of the world and the mind taking off, flying elsewhere, far away, around unknown future, but always coming back, back to this magnetic north, both so inspiring and so sucking in. And flowing are the clouds, as invitating to travel, and remaining are the clouds, as a roof bending your head till the roots.

Le goût des mandarines

Taste of mandarin

Sometimes, memories are linked with five sesnses.
Mothers hands of peeling mandarin, red cover for a kotatsu and a stained news paper by a mandarin juice. And I am always discouraged by something, maybe disappointed love.
Taste of mandarin is linked with a adolescent memories of its sweet and sour taste. Patrick’s Le goût des mandarines is a taste of his memories.

Au fil des jours

Patrick Taberna's work takes the form of a series of portraits of individuals and locations, often observed through incidental detail, such as a hairpin, a torn letter, or extended arms. The studies intriguingly int at close connections with the author's personal past, while eschewing the overt statement of diary or chronicle format. There is no narrative stream, and no expplicit confession; the pictures demand appreciation in their own right, holding the spectator at bay as if to conceal the underlying significance for the artist. But ultimately, the strong sense of discretiononly enhances the subtle insights afforded into the artist's private life.
