When Clothes Make the Man

Dominique Delpoux

Festival L'Image Publique
Place de la Gare et Rue du Puits Mauger
35000 Rennes (FRANCE)

From 2014-10-01 to 2014-10-31

« Clothes don’t make the man » says a popular French proverb with the same meaning than « don’t judge a book by its cover. » But from the 1st to the 31th of October, the Musée de Bretagne contradicts this famous saying through its exhibition "When Clothes Make the Man. Photographs of work wear." Indeed, when it’s about work clothes, appearances are not always deceptive – photo collections of the Musée de Bretagne reveal the codes and symbols of work clothes from 1850 to the present. It invited the photographer Dominique Delpoux (VU’ Agency) in residence. For more than 20 years, this inhabitant of Albi, a city in southern France, has been making portraits of men and women in their daily environment. He regularly explores the sphere of work through documentary series where the social and identity role of work clothing is examined.
During his stay in Bretagne, Dominique Delpoux photographed thirty workers of the Rennes conurbation. Amateur sitters posed both in their work clothes and civil clothes for photographic diptychs. Fifteen of these diptychs are presented on the fences of the construction site for the new metro line.

The whole work of this residence will be shown during the evenings of the festival L’image Publique :
at the Café des Champs-Libres on the 9th of October.
At the Bistrot de la Cité on the 10th of October
At the Phakt on the 16th of October
At the Espace Ouest-France on the 23th of October
