Juan Manuel Castro Prieto traveled across many museums : the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Prado and the Thyssen museum in Madrid for a long-term project. There, he photographed the works, and nevertheless, his images have no documentary vocation, they are not simple reproductions.
No duplication, but Castro Prieto’s look upon a work. Then, the meeting of two looks sometimes separated by several centuries, that of the painter or the sculptor and that of the photographer. However unpleasant it might seem to Eugène Delacroix who wrote " The daguerreotype is more than the mirror, it is the copy of the object ", the photography is not a tautology. Because it is of the look, the question of the perception, visual and sensitive, the cloth or the sculpture, that it is about.
Juan Manuel Castro Prieto questions the apprehension of a work of art quite at the same time as the crossing and the superimposing of two mediums of representation. The subjectivity of the photographer expresses itself here, giving free rein to its eye which becomes attached to a brightness, a reflection, a craquelure on the surface of the cloth…

Opening : Thursday June 19th, 8 pm
