Under the title "Encounters", the Château d'Eau presents a retrospective of the French photographer Bernard Descamps.

"I make images that don't describe objects or events, that don't tell a story, but that would like to reveal tiny fragments of time.
I only seek to dialogue with what is beyond me, what surprises me, what is the source of dreams and desire, remaining solitary and desperate in the face of the grotesque and the horrible, where philosophy and poetry are the only remedies...
Describing the beauty of the world, raving about the richness of cultures, discovering the other were the revelations offered to the innocence of the first travellers, the first photographers.
I travel only to meet myself, to find my images, those that are in me and that I try tirelessly to make appear.
The other is a guide, an initiator and an accomplice in this quest.
I've always hoped that behind the visible aspect of things, there is a spirit.
a kind of animism in which photography could reveal some of that beyond...
Would it be enough to stop time to see beyond appearances?
Dreaming of an ideal image.
I have sought it, this image, I will seek it again, in the Africa of the origins of man, in this fertile drought that saw Lucy - the light, in Asia or very close to me, wherever the wind and life blow...
Maybe one day I'll catch a glimpse of him, this image, this self-portrait...
To glimpse, to see without being able to say anything, for lack of exact words, to make pictures, just pictures..."

Bernard Descamps, February 2014
