Within the scope of the Printemps de la Photographie in Pomerol, Hugues de Wurstemberger displays his series “Farmers” (1995).

Born in 1955 in Bern, Switzerland, the photographer Hugues de Wurstemberger have always known how to capture events with an authentic outlook.
His style is identifiable between thousand : the quality of black and white; the square framing; the choice made to offset the subject to emphasize on his, her or its environment; the refusal of the repetition and of superficial effects… This “fresh look” that couldn’t be taught at school.

Niepce Prize laureate in 1990, he undertook a major project on Swiss Alps and the farming world. He questioned the connections between the alpine landscape, the dairy industry and its farmers. He was conscious of going towards bearing precious witness of a vanishing world, at the opposite of the Switzerland of “banks and tidiness”.

“This work on the country comes from afar. It was the opportunity for Hugues de Wurstemberger to remember how childhood, friends and relatives and the alpine pasture he is so deeply attached to are determining in his work. It was for him a first step in waving hand to mountain farmers. Those “mates and good people” were shocked by modernization, and he scrutinized their daily gestures, their habits, their pastimes and their fights (…)”.
