A Siberian Odyssey

Claudine Doury

Académie des Beaux-Arts
23, quai de Conti
75006 Paris (FRANCE)

From 2018-10-27 to 2018-11-25

Winner in 2017 of the Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière Photography Prize in partnership with the Académie des beaux-arts for her project "A Siberian Odyssey", Claudine Doury presents the work she has accomplished throughout this year as part of the Prize.

"A Siberian Odyssey" is the story of a return: in her project presented to the jury of the prize, Claudine Doury proposed to return in the footsteps of the people she had met over 20 years ago, in 1991 and 1998 along the Amour River. She wanted to testify both the passage of time on these families photographed at the time, but also the changes that had taken place on a larger scale on these populations. The work to be presented this fall at the Academy is a current and intimate portrait of these naï, oultches and nivkhes families found by Claudine Doury during several trips this year to the village of Nergen. Conceived as a kind of mental diary that recreates several temporal strata of the past of these families and peoples, it is also a testimony to the changes taking place on these lands on the border with China, this powerful neighbour that is rapidly redrawing the geopolitics of the entire region.

The exhibition presents some forty unpublished photographs, photographic notebooks taken on Claudine Doury's return from her previous travels on Amour River, as well as archival photographs that put into perspective the history of these living but vulnerable peoples and cultures.
