In May 1989, a huge student movement took place in Beijing to protest the corruption of the regime and demand democracy. The famous Tiananmen Square was occupied night and day. Within a few days, Beijing was completely paralyzed as the people of the city came to support the students in the square. The students were joined by teachers, civil servants, workers and merchants.<\/p>\n

A first free labor union was created. Huge demonstrations took place in many other cities of the country. Faced with this situation, the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party decreed martial law and sent tanks to crush the democratic revolt.<\/p>\n

The repression on the night of June 3-4 resulted in many deaths and thousands of opponents were sent to camps or executed. Some managed to escape like Wu Er Kaixi, student leader who is seen speaking during the movement in Tiananmen Square.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>
