Every year, about 2 million girls give birth before the age of 15. This corresponds to 5 500 girls a day, who progress directly from childhood to motherhood.  <\/span>For the most part, pregnancies among young girls are unintended. Early motherhood is often associated with girls leaving school, and it is estimated that 90% of those who give birth are married. Adolescent girls often have limited or no access to sexual and reproductive health information, education or services. They are likely to lack basic information about their bodies, puberty, sexuality and reproduction and to lack adequate access to contraceptive counselling and services.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>

Very young mothers are often invisible in national and global statistics, which only consider women of reproductive age to be between 15 and 49 years old. Girls are also often excluded from health, education and development interventions. Yet girls under the age of 15 are at the greatest risk of complications and deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth. Every year, about 70 000 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth.<\/span><\/p>\n
