The Caucasus Mountains near Sochi, host of part of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The North Caucasus, the site of one of the most deadly conflicts in Europe, is located in this mountain range. Two devastating wars in Chechnya following the fall of the Soviet Union have generated a wave of violence that has spread throughout the region. Although military operations officially ended in 2009, nearly 700 people have been murdered in the past year in this small multi-ethnic and multi-religious area of Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pieter ten Hoopen, winner of the World Press Photo Award and author of reports from Congo, Afghanistan and Colombia, personalizes the conflict in the North Caucasus with a short film and photos that oscillate between photo-journalism and art. Pieter ten Hoopen and Inna Bukshtynovich, from the Swedish organization Civil Rights Defenders, traveled to Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia in the North Caucasus to document the stories told by the families of victims of serious human rights violations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>
