In March 2011, Japan experienced the largest earthquake in its history. A few hours later, a tsunami was to devastate the northeast coast of the island.<\/p>\n

In Yamada and Higashi-Matsushima, two cities north of Sendai, nothing seems to live under the rubble anymore. Refugees are settling in schools in the surrounding area and returning to what is left of their homes to retrieve personal belongings such as these family photos showing people whose fate we dare not dare to imagine.<\/p>\n

Volunteers are busy distributing food and drinking water. The military is searching for possible survivors and the bodies of the missing in order to give them a decent burial.<\/p>\n

Pieter Ten Hoopen gives an account of the situation in a country still hallucinated by the tragedy it has just lived through and from which it will have to rebuild itself…once again.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>
