This is Afghanistan is the visual testimony of the photojournalist Andrew Quilty, who spent nine years in this dynamic, complex and war-torn country.

Andrew Quilty arrived in Afghanistan in 2013 on a report that was initially intended to last just two weeks. Despite the troubled history of this place of conflicts, he decided to settle permanently in his capital, Kabul, to document the war and its effects on the lives of Afghans. Over the years, he has travelled to more than twenty of the country’s thirty-four provinces in order to capture their daily and human reality.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>

On 15 August 2021, after a 10-day offensive, the Taliban regained control of the country from which they had been driven out 20 years earlier by the Americans. Andrew Quilty was one of a small number of photographers who remained in Kabul to see the withdrawal of international military forces from Afghanistan and the collapse of the government until the Islamist movement took power. As thousands of Afghans fled their country in an emergency, Andrew Quilty captured a shocking moment of transition and humanitarian crisis for the population, in a country already weakened by previous conflicts.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>
