There is an old Chilean saying that “Nothing ever happens in Chile”.
\nSince Pinochet’s coup d’\u00e9tat, this is no longer tenable, although it seems that in the Chilo\u00e9 archipelago, 1100 kilometers south of Santiago, time has largely stood still. I visited this group of islands for seven years. I visited this group of islands for seven years. I lived there without electricity, without hot running water and without health care.
\nIt is a primitive life, rich in myths about the constant struggle with the sea and the land. But the question of how long this way of life will continue to exist remains open. With the advent of new technologies, the development of tourism and salmon farms, economic changes are inevitable – and with them the undermining of age-old social structures and cultural traditions.
\nI recorded the Chilotes while there was still time. The result is the story of a people who believe in ghost ships, witches, God and the power of community.<\/p>\n
