“In Europe in 1987, at the height of the epidemic, no one had yet dared to come out publicly and say ‘I have AIDS’. It was important to give a face to people with the disease. I hoped that talking about someone who was living with AIDS would help to overcome fears, to change misconceptions and preconceptions about the subject. Jean-Louis was the first person in Europe with the virus to agree to be photographed so that these photos of him could appear in the press. I lived with him to be able to take these photos from July 16, 1987, until August, when he entered the hospital to die on November 27. Throughout this reportage, even at the most difficult moments, Jean-Louis never asked me to stop photographing him. It was his unique personality, his intelligence, the deep friendship that was born between us from day one, and his great dignity that made this work possible.”<\/p>\n
