The Boys of Afghanistan’s Ski Fields
2017

It’s in 2009 that the inhabitants from the small Afghan village of Aub Bala, or High Water in Balochi, saw what skis were like for the first time. A man and a woman working for the an international organization had come to the province, better known for its Taliban-destroyed stone Buddhas, to map it. Their goal was to find a way to attract tourists to the place, and they would use skis for that matter. This new mean of transportation attracted the attention of a group of young local boys and so it inspired them to copy the skis with nylon thread nailed to bits of leftover plastic.
