In Iraq, Civilians Flee ISIS Threat
2017

The town of Hawija, 30 kilometers away from Kurdish capital Kirkuk, is ISIS’ last stronghold in the North of Iraq. As it is soon to endure an assault by governmental, American, Shi’a and Kurdish forces, it is being fled by its Sunni inhabitants. But since they fear persecution by Shi’a militians of Hashed al-Shaabi, most of them are headed towards the autonomous Kurdish zone, sometimes walking for days in the desert. Their goal is to pass Peshmerga checkpoints and reach the refugee camps.
However, some of those refugees are suspected to have fought under ISIS flag, therefore forcing the Peshmergas to control each identity.
