The Love Commandos in Delhi

In India, the caste system, religious differences, socio-economic gaps and ancestral traditions of arranged marriages are seen today as a barrier to the freedom to love. The resistance of the families creates many dramas. There are more than a thousand honor killings (mainly women) per year in the country.
India is experiencing significant socio-cultural changes pushing back the country's traditions and customs, mainly in the cities where young people have access to Western models through print media, Internet or movies. In response to the violent disproportionate reactions of families and distress of young people, an Indian journalist created the association Love Commandos in Delhi.
The association is fighting for the rights of young people who were subject to death threats from their families. It provides clandestine places where young couples can hide, as well as information on how to defend their rights. Young people from all over India ask them for help and the association welcomes hundreds of couples. Heart-rending testimonies from lots of young people can be read on the association's website. They are revealing of the wishes of the Indian youth to love freely in a country imprisoned in its customs.
