The mystery of the old Sardinian people
2013

In Sardinia, the main feature of Ogliastra Region is the vigorousness of the nonagenarians and centenarians.
Scientists have begun to unveil the secrets of this outstanding longevity.

Longevity is both subject of wonder and worry. A child born in France in 1900 lived on average 48 years, a new-born in 2013 can expect to blow 81 candles.

For over a decade, 14 villages from Ogliastra, a mountainous region Central-Eastern of Sardinia, are claiming a rare longevity. The extreme longevity index -ratio between the number of births and the number of centenarians- is much higher than the rest of Sardinia.
