Agence VU - Israel Ariño
Israel Ariño

Born in Barcelona in 1974, Israel Ariño studied photography at Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya (IEFC) and at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Barcelona. He's one of those photographers who never stoped at the surface of things and for whom every singe image can be read as a puzzle.

On the string of reality and fiction, on the edge of rationality, he makes pictures which are perceptive and subjective doors to other dimensions which can be dreamlike, imaginary or mournfull, lies or tales.
His world seems to be subverted, at the limit of a tilt or an unsteadiness which could lead to the hallucination, the dream, the madness.

Since 2001, he is periodically exhibiting his work in Spain and France and publishing artists' books: Chambre avec vue (2006), Otras canciones a Guiomar (2008), Anatomía de una desaparición (2009).
His editions allow him to explore and develop, with the photography, his own narrative devices and ideas. In 2012, his book Atlas published by the Editions Anómalas has been selected for the exposition "Books that are photos, photos that are books fotos" at the Museo de Arte Reina Sofía of Madrid which is presenting the most prestigious photography's books. In 2013, he became member of the publishing house Ediciones Anómalas.

Israel Ariño is represented by the Galerie VU in Paris.

The name which erases the colour (2014)

The series Le nom qui efface la couleur articulate itself around the idea of the achievable, the possibility to be a thing or another, to fall or to fly, to stay or to disappear … Eventually, of this freedom which belongs to the man and forces him to choose betwenn several positions. The project took place at Blanc – space which erases the colour – where we can behold the edges of a forgotten territory, his granitic particularity, but also his more fleeting aspects. This series is born from a abstraction, a particular state where the mind opens itself to the exploration of the limits of the photography to attend to the emergence of a new place, more vague and ambiguous but at...

Terra Incognita (2012)

Atlas (2012)

The Atlas series represents an autobiographical synthesis, full of obsessions, appearances and discoveries. Taking a picture became a thoughtful act, which incorporate the crossing of experiences, times and spaces as well as the latent desire to build a image of the world in which the author can recognize herself. Traducing these feelings is relying on the resort of fiction, the research of the strange and the extraordinary as symbolic pretext. Atlas is taking up a challenge : to represent the journey of his own experience, over poetic spaces where the unusual happens, where no tricks can be planned. Here, the photographer try less to capture than to invent ( from the latin...

Crónicas de un desembarco (2006)

On a wintry afternoon, a little story came to my hears. The follow up and the marks left by this story drove me to Maderuelo, a smal castilian village. In the series the village serves as an excuse to signify experiences, to dispose several times, physical, metaphorical and imaginary in order to compose them as reflexive and vital territories. The journey is suggesting the frontier, the threshold where the past, present and futur form the creation's process built from an internal entity, which mannifest itself in the scenery. The series Crónicas de un desembarco illustrates the crossing of the experience through these poetic spaces where the unusual is a place, where the photography...

Atlas

The Atlas series represents an autobiographical synthesis, full of obsessions, appearances and discoveries. Taking a picture became a thoughtful act, which incorporate the crossing of experiences, times and spaces as well as the latent desire to build a image of the world in which the author can recognize herself.
Traducing these feelings is relying on the resort of fiction, the research of the strange and the extraordinary as symbolic pretext. Atlas is taking up a challenge : to represent the journey of his own experience, over poetic spaces where the unusual happens, where no tricks can be planned. Here, the photographer try less to capture than to invent ( from the latin « invenire », discover ) in other words to find something that was not given straight away.
The themes' continuity wrapped around the idea of time is also inspiring the project. By working this timeless and permanent background, the series gathers experiences which deal with this sensation of revelation and keep questionning the desire to watch, the feeling of coming back to the same ideas, knowing that even if they are the same, they also are always differents. In that sense, to take a picture is nothing else but to express oneself in the landscape, by mapping a fictional space, build from an internal entity, gifted with intention, born from the necessity to communicate by letting itself be driven by the experimentation and the contact with landscape, bodies and things.

Terra Incognita

Terra Incognita is born from a territory's exploration by the one who wish to be observer and observed. It is a journey toward the unknown. Far from the daily life, this space is questionning us by being conniving and distant at the same time. She draws a symbolic map in which the memory and the magic of the place emerge. In this game with the nature, the look, personal and subjective, discovers ( probes, invents ) weird pictures, dreamlike, almost improbable.

This viewable and yet intangible world makes us tip : the trouble between reality and imaginary, seducing, is constantly renewing, and keep us from holding back what really happened in these places.

From all these feelings born from Terra Incognita. All these pictures of transitional landscapes, changing and intangible, sometimes fleing our gazes, yet they invite us to sharpen our perception of landscape.

The series Terra Incognita has been realised as part of the artist residency at l’Aparté, lieu d’art contemporain in Bretagne, France.
