For years now, Bertrand Carrière has been working on a photographic journal, in parallel to his documentary projects.
Le Capteur was conceived out of a series of artist books he produced during this 12-year process. These books enable him to explore the many aspects of his work and are the meeting place where images collide and relate. In a distillation process, the journal loses its chronological aspects to become a place where images meet in improbable ways. With this project, Carrière continues his search for the small, marginal moments, details that mark his way, his family life, his travels, be they dark or luminous. Using motifs and recurring signs, he slowly builds an inner territory, a personal atlas, where the strange and the ordinary meet. Carrière also gives us notes from his diary that act as counterpoints to the photographs. These poetic texts become a constellation of mental images, written contact sheets, accompanying the remarkable intensity of his photographs.

Bertrand Carrière is a photographer and video artist who actively exhibits and publishes his work across Canada and in Europe. In the last 35 years, Carrière has put together a large body of photographic work that is varied and very personal. His works can be divided in two main axes. First, there is a documentary approach that encompasses landscapes – small and vast – and portraits. Using time, memory, and history, he explores stories that are bound to the land, traces of which persist to this day. Then in the second axis, he explores the intimate life around him. In a daily practice, he explores reality for its fictional potential and autobiographical echoes. All his work aims to produce images that highlight the irregularities and poetical ambiguities of the visible world.
