Silences

These photographs are immersed in the sacred places of southern India, their stones, the way they are worn, the five elements of Hinduism, centuries of prayer, etc. Mamallapuram and its very ancient sanctuaries, Trichy, Tanjore whose sumptuous temple is a world heritage site, Madurai, Rameswaram, not to be missed by any self-respecting pilgrim, where the god Rama came to purify himself killing the demon Ravana...
These images are silences lifted out of time.
Silences shared with men and women at prayer, with the countless divinities who people these places of pilgrimage.
These images explain nothing. There is nothing to explain. They do not show very much.
“Most things are not visible. They attempt merely to accompany an emotion, an emotion I felt when I walked into one of these temples for the first time, when the hurly-burly of the street faded away, when the silences made way for words”.
Bernard Descamps
