Convoy to the East

In 1997 Claude Pauquet produced a project on the route taken by his mother when she was deported, as a member of the Résistance, to Auschwitz and Birkenau in Poland, to Ravensbrück in Germany and to Mauthausen in Austria from 1943 to 1945.
She was part of the only convoy of Frenchwomen deported as members of the Résistance, known as the Convoy of 27th January 1943, which also included Marie-Claude Vaillant-Couturier, Charlotte Delbo and Danièle Casanova, amongst others.
Claude Pauquet’s project was split into two periods, a journey towards winter and the camps, and the trip back to France in the springtime. We have to pass things on which means repeating and writing them down again. Claude Pauquet knows that he is “rewriting” the beginning of Nuit et Brouillard (Night And Fog), the beginning of Shoah and the books of Charlotte Delbo. In low-key images, taken in panoramic format, he recreates this fixed time, the weight of things and the silence which bathed these places which knew only horror.

The exhibition consists of 47 black and white prints:
- 9 x 27 cm (35) on baryte paper, framed in 40 x 50 cm - 40 x 120 cm format (12) on baryte paper, laminated on dibbon, with fasteners at the back.
The 35 prints in 40 x 50 cm format are packaged in crates.
